There's a huge disconnect between the image that's being portrayed of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the reality of his actions on the ground. Something's amiss.
Zelensky is corrupt. There is no good guy in this fight. Not Russia, not Ukraine, not the United States. Zelensky has allowed the 3 sons of the Biden’s, Kerry, Pelosi to be on the payroll of energy companies to launder money. The Clinton’s have been involved in shady deals in Ukraine for years. The Level 4 Biolabs are against the Geneva Convention, apparently set up by either the Pentagon or ROSEMONT Seneca, Hunter Biden’s Company, depending upon what you read. . Zelensky knew about them. The Ukraine is the 4th most corrupt country in the world. I feel badly for the Ukrainian people. Their democratically elected government in 2014 was overthrown quietly & ever since there has been no peace.
I'm in accordance with your sentiments with the exception of "democratically elected government." There are no governments "elected by the people." All government leaders are placed in power by people with more money (and/or power, influence, charisma, whatever) than those assuming the mantle of leadership. It is even more obvious now than it ever was. Trump would never had made it into office were it not for specific elite power brokers wanting him there. Same thing for Biden. Voting may mean something on a local leverl, but certainly not when it involves the United States of America, Inc.
Why were those “specific” elite power brokers not able to keep Trump in office if that were the case? IMHO TRUMP was a one off, the people overwhelmingly voted him in. They did it again in 2020 but the power elites made sure it didn’t work that time.

I had pretty much the same reaction when I first heard about Zelensky's actions. Putting all information under control of the government and suppressing opposition parties -- not just monitoring, but physically forbidding under penalty of law -- is a mark of tyranny, not the protection of freedoms. In a country already corrupt, this kind of tyranny solidifies and perpetuates the corruption. The only way to undo even a portion of the tyranny is to overthrow the tyrant, and even then, one risks replacing him with another tyrant. But even if not, where will the replacement come from, with all the mechanisms of a multi-party system dismantled? In any case, the increased corruption (remember, Ukraine was among the top 5 of corrupt states worldwide even before the war) is firmly in place and will continue to function regardless of the head of state. We can look to Russia itself for an example of this.
Corrupt vs least corrupt. Hard to know who is the good guy (We know the bad guy is the one invading) but is there a good guy? Who do you support when there's no good guy?
What do you do when the Mafia is fighting Murder Incorporated? I'd say the best option is to stand back and watch them fight it out. With any luck, they'll weaken each other even if they don't destroy each other.

I would surmise that DJT served his purpose by bringing USA, Inc. back to the center to maintain the balance for a time. He may not have been fully cognizant of it (those outside the Elite Core seldom are). When they realized that more SCOTUS members would be chosen by DJT, they probably surmised that FJB should "get his turn." We may end up with an unconstitutionally mandated "first black woman" who is woefully unqualified. I wonder if she will be treated as "kindly" as Clarence Thomas or Brett Kavanaugh.
