Asking them to vote for someone from the other party for any particular election, other than their straight party ticket, is akin to asking them to change, not just their vote, but to change their "family;" i.e., a bridge too far. It didn't help that the caliber of politicians running has diminished markedly over the years; who would want to subject his/her family to the rigors of politics in this cancel culture environment?
That said, let's assume that, given electronic voting machines, the powers that be can now dial up any election results they want.
